Devastating floods in Todmorden brought by Storm Ciara 2020

Storm Ciara swept across the whole of the UK on Sunday 9th bringing heavy rain and very strong winds. Heavy rain and flash flooding left parts of Todmorden in West Yorkshire under water.

Once again businesses and residential homes suffered water damage to their properties and belongings. Many residents were not covered by flood insurance and had set about emptying their damaged possessions from their properties, in particular from their cellars.

The community spirit of Todmordians was exceptional. There was no crying, moaning or disillusionment. Instead the community rallied together to offer help and support. The Local Council set up a flood hub immediately at the Town hall, supplies soon came pouring in to help with the mass clean up. Volunteers worked alongside emergency services and the Council to assist residents and businesses in cleaning up the mess left behind by the flood waters.

Integrate Todmorden arranged a number of volunteers from Hamza Mosque to assist residents in cleaning out their cellars. Nadeem Mir QPM, the Chair of Integrate Todmorden said, “Flooding does not discriminate; we were all affected in the same way. As one community we came together as one and offer our help unconditionally.”

The Mayor of Todmorden Cllr Ken White said “Thank you so much for the help and sending the volunteers, they were fantastic”.
